Last season, Azerbaijan's women's volleyball clubs were remembered for their interesting transfers. Some of them strengthened their squad with players from Latin America, and this choice fully justified itself. For example, Colombian Melissa Rangel helped "Ganja" win a bronze medal.
The center blocker shared her impressions of playing in the Major League in an interview with Idman.Biz.
- Melissa, how do you rate the past season? How difficult was it to adapt to both the new team and the unfamiliar championship?
- For me, it was a very interesting and important season. It wasn't easy at first – a different country, a different volleyball style, new teammates. But in "Ganja" I was received very warmly, and therefore the adaptation went faster than I expected. After each game, I felt more confident and I think we performed well.
- The team sometimes lacked stability in the regular season. But in the playoffs, the club made a completely different impression, lost to the reigning champion "Turan" in the semi-finals, and defeated the National Aviation Academy in the bronze medal game. Can we say that the result corresponded to the logic of the game?
- I think so. In some moments, there was a lack of experience, but the most important thing was the development of the team. The playoffs actually showed what we are capable of. The team showed character, played more confidently and more organized. Bronze medals are a good result that we can be proud of.
- Does being named the best blocker of the championship make you feel proud?
- Actually, it's a great honor. Any individual achievement means the evaluation of your work. But in volleyball, everything depends on the team. It is impossible to show a high level without good passing, defense and the support of teammates. Therefore, I consider this award to be the success of the entire club and coaching staff.
- You have played in Spain, Peru, Portugal and Brazil. In your opinion, what is the main difference between the Azerbaijan championship?
- Each league has its own style. In Brazil, volleyball is very fast and emotional, while in Europe, tactics are more in the foreground. The Azerbaijan championship seemed quite competitive to me, and physical preparation plays a key role here. There are many experienced legionnaires and good local players here. I think the level of the tournament will increase even more. It was interesting for me to play in such an atmosphere.
- I guess you have also discovered Azerbaijani cuisine. What dishes have you tasted?
- Of course, how could it be otherwise?! I really liked pilaf, dolma and kebab. And tea is a completely different culture. People here are very hospitable, and the attitude towards guests can be felt from the cuisine as well.
- You are also one of the leaders of the Colombian national team. What goals is the team currently preparing for?
- We are currently focused on international tournaments and qualifying competitions. The Colombian national team has great ambitions, and we want to continue to develop as a team and compete decently with the strongest national teams in the world.
- Where will you continue your career? Will you stay in "Ganja" or will you accept a new challenge?
- It's too early to talk about it yet. I am currently considering various options and discussing my future with my agent. But I can say that I really enjoyed being in Azerbaijan and in "Ganja". This season left me with only good memories.
