Borussia Dortmund made an ironic post regarding the name of the Baku Olympic Stadium ahead of its Champions League match against Sabah.
İdman.Biz reports that the German club's official Instagram account posted a video of a training session at the stadium. The video featured the following text: "We just call it the Olympic Stadium, even though the Olympic Games have never been held here. They will not notice any of it."
The caption of the post also included a sarcastic remark: "Apparently, there are smart people here."
However, the authors of the video overlooked an important fact about the stadium's history. As noted on UEFA's official website, the Baku Olympic Stadium was built for the inaugural European Games held in 2015. Therefore, presenting the name of the arena as a point unrelated to sports history is incorrect.
The opening and closing ceremonies of "Baku-2015" were held at this very stadium. The ceremonies took place on June 12th and 28th, respectively. Athletes from 50 countries participated in the competition, organized by the European Olympic Committees.
Of course, the European Games and the Olympic Games are different competitions, and it is true that the Olympic Games have not been held in Baku. Nevertheless, an important point was overlooked in Dortmund's representative's joke: The Baku Olympic Stadium was built for the first European Games, one of the largest international events of the European Olympic movement.
