The torch for the 2026 Winter Olympics, which will be held in Italy, has been lit in Greece. The ceremony was supposed to take place at the Ancient Olympia stadium, but was moved to the Archaeological Museum due to bad weather.
Idman.Biz reports that the President of Greece, Konstantinos Tasulas, and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Kirsty Coventry, also participated in the lighting ceremony.
Ancient Olympia is considered the birthplace of the Olympic Games, and the lighting of the torch here has been considered the symbolic starting point of the Games since 1936. The high priestess traditionally lit the torch by collecting sunlight through a parabolic mirror and presented the flame, embodying peace, purity, and the continuity of the Olympic spirit, to the torchbearer.
It should be noted that the Milano-Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics will be held from February 6 to 22.
