Azerbaijani figure skater Nargiz Suleymanova has made history in both national sports and figure skating by competing at the European Championships in Sheffield, Great Britain. She became the first Azerbaijani woman to compete in the European Figure Skating Championships.
Idman.Biz reports that Suleymanova performed the short program at the continental championship and scored 46.60 points, taking 30th place among 38 participants. The Azerbaijani figure skater failed to qualify among the top 24 athletes who would continue the fight in the free program.
After the short program, Estonian representative Niina Petrokina took the lead with 70.61 points. Nina Pinzarrone (Belgium) – 64.97 points and Anna Petssetta (Italy) - 64.85 points followed in the next places.
As noted, Nargiz Suleymanova was the first Azerbaijani woman to compete in the European Figure Skating Championships. Previously, Azerbaijan was represented at continental championships in this sport only by naturalized athletes.
Despite not qualifying for the final stage of the women's singles skating in Sheffield, it is impossible not to note the development of the Azerbaijani athlete. Especially considering that participation in the European Championship is not granted automatically and is earned purely on a sporting principle. Taking into account the experience gained, in the next season, we can expect Nargiz Suleymanova not only to achieve better results in the continental championship, but also to perform decently at the World Championships.
In addition to Suleymanova, Samantha Ritter and Daniel Brykalov, who compete in ice dancing, also represent Azerbaijan at the European Championships in Sheffield.
