Maharram Sultanzade: Our national team without legionnaires achieved the most successful result in recent years at the European Championship

Idman.biz reports that this was stated by Maharram Sultanzade, Secretary General of the Azerbaijan Athletics Federation, in a statement to the press service of the organization.

He called the results achieved in the competition successful: "The team, which is in the 3rd division in the competition, took 6th place among 15 countries, scoring a total of 315.5 points. The national team was 10th in 2017, 11th in 2019, 15th in 2021, and 13th in 2023, which we participated with 8 athletes. After the analyzes, our goal this time was to be represented by a wider team. As a result, 24 athletes went to Slovenia. Another point I want to emphasize is that there were no legionnaires in the team this time. I can say that our athletes have lived up to the trust placed in them."

Sultanzade also commented on the athletes' performances: "Alham Naghiyev took 1st place in both the 100 and 200 meter races. In the women's competition in these distances, Lamiya Veliyeva took 2nd place. Lamiya set a new Azerbaijani record in the 200 meter distance with a score of 23.58 seconds. In the triple jump, Rustam Mammadov, and among women in this event, Yekaterina Sariyeva, surpassed all their rivals. In the 4x400 relay, our representatives renewed another national record in the mixed relay. Jabir Aliyev, Ismayil Aliyev, Bakhtiyar Asgarli, Anna Yusupova and other athletes also earned very important points for our team. We believe that the work carried out under the leadership of the Federation President Javid Gurbanov will be even more successful. Our goal is to ensure the continuous development of our athletes, to identify promising young athletes and provide them with maximum support, and to make our people happy with successful results in the upcoming competitions.
