In 2022, Cristiano Ronaldo criticized Manchester United, and especially Erik ten Hag, during a conversation with Piers Morgan. The Portuguese has been playing in the Saudi Arabian League for a long time, and the current head coach of the "Red Devils" is his compatriot Ruben Amorim.
According to Lent.az, citing foreign media, in a new interview with Cristiano, Morgan could not help but ask about the current Manchester United. Although Cristiano praised his former national teammate, he still noted the shortcomings of the "red devils":
"I feel sad for one of the most important clubs in the world, a club that still has a special place in my heart. A club should be led by intelligent people who can build a solid foundation for the future. Manchester United used to have such people - Nicky Butt, Gary Neville, Roy Keane, David Beckham. Currently, Manchester United lacks structure. I hope this will change in the future. After all, this is one of the most important clubs of the century.
Of course, I follow Manchester United's current results; I spent many years at this club, won many team and individual cups. I repeat, Manchester United is still in my heart. But we must honestly admit that the club is not on the right track; changes are needed.
Amorim is doing his best. What else can he do? Hope for a miracle? But miracles don't happen. As we say in Portugal, miracles only happen in Fatima (the city where the Fatima shrine is located). He won't perform a miracle. Let's take the players - Manchester United has good players, but many simply don't understand what Manchester United is."
At a press conference before the Premier League game between the "red devils" and Tottenham, Ruben Amorim reacted to Ronaldo's words as follows:
"Of course, he knows what he's talking about. Everything he says has influence and great weight. But it is important that we focus on the future. As a club, we know that we have made many mistakes in the past, but we are trying to correct them.
So, let's not pay attention to what has already happened; let's focus on what we are doing now. We are changing fundamentally - we are changing the structure, our approach, the players' attitudes. We are changing and getting better. So, let's focus on the task at hand and forget the past for a while."
