The number of teams in all professional leagues in Turkish football will be reduced. Sport24.az reports that this was stated in a statement released by the Turkish Football Federation.
The decision was made at a meeting of the Board of Directors of the organization today.
In the next - 2025/26 season, the Super League will be held with the participation of 18 teams. In the current season, this number is 19. 3 teams will be promoted from the First League to the main league.
The statement noted that although the goal was to gradually reduce the number of teams in the Super League, which was held with the participation of 21 teams in the 2020/2021 season, as well as in all other leagues, the earthquake in 2023 prevented this. This goal was not achieved due to the requests of some clubs affected by the disaster to leave the league.
From the 2025/2026 season, the gradual reduction of the number of teams will begin. The current number of 139 professional teams will be reduced to 120 based on relegation and promotion rules.
The decision will also apply to other lower professional leagues in addition to the Super League.
