Chelsea and Spanish national team left-back Marc Cucurella has made candid statements about the situation at the club and his future plans. The 27-year-old footballer attributed the London club's recent failures to the youth of the squad and the decisions of the management.
Idman.Biz reports with reference to "The Athletic" that Cucurella said it was difficult to digest the defeat in the 1/8 finals of the Champions League against PSG (8:2 on aggregate).
Cucurella said the following about their loss to PSG:
"We lacked experience. For many players, this was the first game at that level, and we paid the price for it. You can make mistakes, but we should have managed the situation better. I understand the management's policy - they buy young players and look to the future. But for big titles, balance is needed. It is very difficult to fight in the Premier League or the Champions League with just young people."
Touching on the change of head coach during the season, the Spanish defender considers the departure of Enzo Maresca, who was dismissed in January, a mistake:
"Enzo was the most important of the six permanent coaches I have worked with. We knew exactly what he wanted. When Maresca left, it had a big impact on us. If they had asked me, I wouldn't have made that decision. It would have been better to wait until the end of the season. Instability in the club stems from such decisions."
He added that the current head coach, Liam Rosonior, is a good specialist, but due to the density of games, he does not have time to implement his tactical ideas.
Satisfied with his performance in the national team, Cucurella believes that Spain is the main favorite in the World Cup to be held this summer:
"Yes, we believe in it. When we became European champions, people were skeptical of us, but now everyone believes in us."
He also emphasized that he considers the England national team under the leadership of Thomas Tuchel to be one of the most dangerous rivals, and it is very difficult to defend against players such as Cole Palmer and Michael Olise.
