Kurban Berdyev, head coach of "Turan Tovuz," has stated that he supports the complete abolition of the legionnaire limit in Russian football, citing Azerbaijan's experience as an example.
Idman.Biz reports that the Russian-Turkmen specialist said that after the abolition of the limit in the Azerbaijani championship, the level of competition increased significantly, and local football players began to develop faster.
According to Berdyev, the current situation in the Azerbaijan Premier League differs significantly from last season.
"In Azerbaijan, they have now abolished the limit. The level has increased several times! Now the leaders can lose points against any team. Azerbaijani football players, including players from our team, are making more effort than last year. Because last year their place in the squad was guaranteed.
Now they are working harder and getting into the national team. If it were the system of last year, they would not be able to get into the national team – they were satisfied with playing in the club's main squad. Competition is everywhere. Competition drives business as well. It's the same here – any football player develops," Berdyev said on the "Cappuccino & Catenaccio" podcast.
The specialist added that competition with strong foreign football players has a positive effect on the development of local players.
"I cited the example of "Turan." Last year they knew they would play in the squad. But this year you have to work hard. They started working – they were called up to the national team! They had never been called up to the national team before," Berdyev emphasized.
It should be reminded that "Turan Tovuz" under the leadership of Berdyev became the bronze medalist of the Azerbaijan Premier League and qualified for the Conference League.
