The Iceland national team has already arrived in Baku. The team will play an important match against the Azerbaijani national team on November 13 as part of the 2026 World Cup qualifying round.
According to Idman.Biz, assistant head coach David Snorri Younsson said in a statement to Fotbolti.net in Baku that this game is considered by the management and players as a key match in the fight for qualification for the play-off stage.
According to him, the team has focused all its attention on the game against Azerbaijan before thinking about other opponents.
Younsson said that the first day after arriving in Baku was dedicated to the recovery process, as the players arrived via different routes and with different loads. The team's full-fledged training is planned to begin after the adaptation period, and the entire preparation process will be focused on the game in Baku.
The Icelandic expert also shared his impressions of the capital of Azerbaijan and the created conditions:
"Baku is really a very beautiful city, there is a special atmosphere here. Good conditions have been created for us, there are all opportunities to calmly prepare for an important game. The team feels comfortable on the road, and this helps to fully focus on football," David Snorri Younsson concluded.
He added that most of the players have gathered in good shape after club games. Only one player has a minor injury problem, but overall the team is fully ready for the decisive stage.
Touching on the sports side, the assistant head coach recalled that Iceland is preparing for this game based on the results drawn from the previous match with Azerbaijan (5:0):
"We try to improve something in every match. We already had some answers in the game with Azerbaijan, and now we are adding new details and preparing our tactical solutions," Younsson said.
The expert also emphasized that high competition and strong trust among the players are maintained within the team:
"Our squad is deep and balanced, a strong core has formed in the team. Although we are not the largest country, we have good players and we think broadly. We have a clear goal ahead of us and the game in Baku is an important part of this path," the Icelandic coach concluded.
It should be noted that the match between the national teams of Azerbaijan and Iceland will take place on Thursday and will start at 21:00 Baku time.
