Dutch national team and PSV football team midfielder Coi Verman received a red card in the ninth minute of the AZ vs Johan Cruyff Super Cup match.
Sportnieuws reports that Verman kicked opponent striker Mecs Merdink in the face with his foot while fighting for the ball in the center of the field. The chief referee initially continued the game, but after VAR intervention, he re-watched the episode and expelled the player from the field.
Merdink, who was injured, continued the game and opened the score in the 25th minute. Uesley Patati, Elayca Dijkstra, and Ro-Zancelo Daal also scored in the second half.
AZ won the match 4-0, winning the Johan Cruyff Super Cup for the second time in their history. The team previously won this award in 2009.
