The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced that the Africa Cup of Nations has been expanded to 28 teams. Sport24.az reports that the tournament will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda next year.
According to CAF President Patrice Motsepe, the aim of this decision is to increase the level of competition and further boost interest in football in the region.
The format of participation for the four additional teams and the date of implementation of the innovation have not yet been announced. Since the previous expansion in 2019, 24 national teams have participated in the final stage of the Africa Cup of Nations.
Motsepe also confirmed that the Africa Cup of Nations will move to a four-year cycle starting in 2028. In addition, there are plans to create an African Nations League, which will be held annually starting in 2029. All 54 associations affiliated with CAF will participate in the new tournament, and the final stage will consist of 16 teams.
