24-year-old Indian chess player Vaishali Rameshbabu has won the 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament held in Cyprus.
Idman.Biz reports that Rameshbabu defeated Russian Kateryna Lagno in the final round of the competition.
With this victory, Vaishali Rameshbabu scored 8.5 points, surpassing Kazakhstani chess player Bibisara Assaubayeva in the tournament standings. Assaubayeva drew with Indian Divya Deshmukh in the final stage and finished the tournament with eight points.
The 2026 Women's Candidates Tournament was held in Peyia, Cyprus, from March 28 to April 16. Vaishali Rameshbabu will compete against current world champion Ju Wenjun of China for the chess crown.
