Azerbaijani grandmaster Shahriyar Mamedyarov has improved his position in the world ranking thanks to two victories in team competitions at the start of the European Championship held in Batumi, Georgia.
Idman.biz reports that in the first two rounds of the continental championship, our men's team defeated Slovakia 3:1 and drew 2:2 with the Czech Republic.
Mamedyarov, performing on the first board, won in both matches - he demonstrated a confident game against Slovak Yargus Pechak and Czech Tay Nguyen. These results earned him 6.3 points and raised his overall score to 2748.3, moving him from 14th to 13th place.
He is currently separated from Chinese Wei Yi, who is in 12th place, by only 0.5 points. He is 3.7 points short of the 10th place held by Indian world champion Domaju Gukesh. If Shahriyar Mamedyarov continues his winning streak at the European Championship, he may return to the world's "top 10" at the end of the competition.
In the third round of the tournament, the Azerbaijani national team will face the Polish team. Rauf Mammadov, who lost in the match against the Czech Republic, will not be in the squad this time.
Our women's team, on the other hand, won 2.5:1.5 against the strong Hungarian team in the previous round. Ulviyya Fataliyeva and Ayan Allahverdiyeva signed for the success, and Khanim Balajayeva suffered the only defeat.
Our female chess players, who have collected four out of four possible points, are in the leading group. In the third round, the team will face France. Gulnar Mammadova has returned to the squad this time, and Govhar Beydullayeva will rest.
