Twenty-year-old Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov has won the 2026 Candidates Tournament in Peyia, Cyprus, with one round to spare.
Idman.Biz reports that in the 13th round of the competition, Sindarov played with black pieces and drew with one of his main rivals, Anish Giri of the Netherlands. Javokhir has now reached 9.5 points.
The final, 14th round of the 2026 Candidates Tournament will be a formality in the title race, as Sindarov's rivals have no theoretical chance of ousting him from the lead.
By winning the 2026 Candidates Tournament, Sindarov will officially face 19-year-old Gukesh Dommaraju of India in a match for the world chess crown.
