The first matches of the 1/4 final stage of the Azerbaijan Chess Championship have been held.
Idman.Biz reports that the symbolic first move was made by Mahir Mammadov, President of the Azerbaijan Chess Federation, Vice-President of the International Chess Federation.
Shahriyar Mamedyarov, the rating favorite of the competition, defeated Ahmad Ahmadzade with black pieces. Draws were recorded in the matches Rauf Mammadov - Read Samadov, Mahammad Muradli - Eltaj Safarli, Aydin Suleymanli - Nijat Abasov.
In the women's competition, Ulviyya Fataliyeva defeated Sabina Ibrahimova with black pieces, and Ayan Allahverdiyeva defeated Gunay Mammadzada. Turkan Mammadyarova, who competed with white pieces, defeated Narmin Abdinova. The match Khanim Balajayeva - Gulnar Mammadova ended in a draw.
The second matches of the 1/4 final stage will be played today. The championship will end on February 22.
The total prize fund of the competition is 92,000 AZN. 62,000 AZN of this amount belongs to the men's championship, and 30,000 AZN to the women's championship.
