28-year-old Dutch grandmaster Anish Giri has won the FIDE open tournament - "Grand Swiss 2025", which ended in Samarkand (Uzbekistan).
Idman.biz reports that Giri scored 8 points in 11 rounds of the tournament. In the last round, he managed to defeat American Hans Niemann.
Thus, Giri qualified for the "Candidates Tournament - 2025". German grandmaster Matthias Bluebaum, who took second place in the "Grand Swiss" according to additional indicators, also qualified for the mentioned competition.
It should be noted that our country is represented in Samarkand by Shahriyar Mammadyarov, Rauf Mammadov, Aydin Suleymanli, Muhammad Muradli, as well as Ulviyya Fataliyeva, Govhar Beydullayeva and Khanim Balajayeva.
Other chess players still have the opportunity to qualify for the "Candidates Tournament". The fate of three tickets will be decided by the World Cup (October 31 - November 27), one by the "FIDE Circuit 2025", and one by the FIDE rating.
The total prize fund of the tournament is 855,000 US dollars.
