Javier Mendez, the founder of the AKA gym, former UFC lightweight champion, and coach of Russian Islam Makhachev, doubts that his fighter could become a league champion in three weight classes.
Idman.biz reports that Mendez noted that only UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov was capable of this.
"I think Khabib could easily have been a UFC champion in three weight classes, but I'm not sure about Islam. Moreover, I can't say what Makhachev himself wants. Khabib could have done it, but that wasn't his goal. I understand that Islam wants to move up to middleweight and take the second belt to strengthen his legacy.
In my opinion, Makhachev needs to defend his title in middleweight several times. We also need to see how he feels in the new category," Mendez said.
