American tennis player Venus Williams has received a "wild card" (a special invitation from organizers regardless of ranking or qualifying rounds) to participate in the "Australian Open" tournament.
Idman.Biz reports that, according to information released by the tournament's press service, the 45-year-old athlete could become the oldest participant in the history of the Australian Open and surpass the record set by Japanese Kimiko Date at 44 years old.
Venus Williams is a five-time "Wimbledon" champion and a two-time US Open champion. She has also won 14 Grand Slam titles in doubles with her sister Serena. Williams won a gold medal in singles at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and together with Serena, she won three more gold medals in doubles in 2000, 2008, and 2012.
The "Australian Open" tournament will be held from January 18 to February 1.
