Italian Mattia Debertolis, a participant in the World Games held in Chengdu, China, has passed away.
Idman.biz reports that the tragedy occurred a few days ago during an orienteering competition.
Mattia lost his way in the forest paths. The signal about his disappearance was received via a GPS device - this device is mandatory for every orienteering athlete. The athlete was quickly found and given medical assistance at the scene, but Debertolis did not regain consciousness. He was then placed in one of the best hospitals in China.
Doctors did their best for four days in the intensive care unit to save the 29-year-old athlete's life. During this time, his mother, brother, and wife came to Chengdu. But Debertolis passed away.
He was not only a professional athlete but also an IT engineer. He worked in a large company in Stockholm. Nevertheless, he participated in competitions as part of the Italian national team for a long time and won numerous awards. He also played ski racing and football.
What caused his death? There is still no clear answer to this question. A statement issued by the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) also includes the views of the Italian press. It is reported that the competition was held in extreme conditions - severe heat and high humidity may have affected the athlete's condition. It should be noted that orienteering is considered one of the sports with a high risk of injury and danger.
