Swiss national hockey team head coach Patrick Fischer has admitted to using a false certificate claiming he was vaccinated against COVID-19 in order to bypass travel restrictions to Beijing for the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Idman.Biz reports that Fischer said in a statement that he made a serious mistake by traveling to Beijing with the Swiss men's team using false documents.
"I am very sorry that I disappointed people in this situation. I was in an extreme personal crisis because I didn't want to get vaccinated. At the same time, of course, I didn't want to disappoint my team at the Olympics," CBC quotes Fischer.
In 2023, Swiss authorities fined him approximately $50,000 for forging documents. Shortly thereafter, he publicly confessed his guilt. Fischer is one of the most successful Swiss hockey coaches of all time. He has held the position since 2015 and has led the team to three Olympics and three silver medals at the World Championships. His team reached the quarter-finals at the 2022 Olympics, where COVID-19 testing was mandatory and the NHL did not participate due to the pandemic.
