Two-time Olympic figure skating champion Evgeni Plushenko commented on his son Alexander's move to the Azerbaijani figure skating team.
According to Idman.Biz, the Russian Figure Skating Federation gave permission for the 13-year-old athlete to transfer at today's Executive Committee meeting.
According to Plushenko, his son has acquired Azerbaijani sports citizenship for a period of five years.
"Yes, Sasha has acquired Azerbaijani sports citizenship for a period of five years. We'll see how it goes. Sasha is still very young, he is 13 years old. He was not a member of the Russian national team and did not compete this season for various reasons, he was kind of in quarantine. He didn't take anyone's place; he trained at my personal academy," RIA Novosti quoted Plushenko as saying.
The Russian expert also noted that the family's decision was not easy and expressed hope for the development of cooperation in figure skating between Azerbaijan and Russia.
"This is a very difficult decision. Sasha is facing a crucial and exciting period in his life. I hope for the friendship and support of Russia and Azerbaijan in this sport. I believe that we will work together, help and support each other for the development of figure skating in our countries. It is a difficult time now, and such support is very important," said Plushenko.
