Azerbaijani athletes have performed successfully at the European Sambo Championship among youths and juniors held in Novi Sad, Serbia.
Idman.Biz reports this with reference to the president of the Azerbaijan Sambo Federation, Ceyhun Mammadov.
According to the information, Azerbaijani sambo wrestlers won three bronze medals among youths. In the youth category, one gold, two silver and one bronze medal were won.
"Our only European champion was Tunjay Shamil, who competed in the 98 kg weight category. Eljan Alakbarov (58 kg) and Mikayil Amirov (71 kg) won silver medals. Hajibaba Imamaliyev (+98 kg) won a bronze medal. Among the youths, Abdullatif Musayev (53 kg), Yusif Huseynov (58 kg) and Elshan Farzaliyev (+98 kg) won bronze medals," said Ceyhun Mammadov.
The head of the Federation especially praised the performance of the athlete who won the gold medal:
"I am very happy for Tunjay. He is only 20 years old, but he has already managed to become a bronze medalist of the national championship among adults. I think that the transition from judo to sambo was successful for both him and our sport."
It should be noted that last year the Azerbaijan Judo Federation disqualified Tunjay Shamil for 10 years for violating the rules of discipline.
