23-year-old Italian gymnast Lorenzo Bonicelli has fallen into a coma after a fall during the Universiade held in Germany.
"Report" reports, citing foreign media, that the athlete made an unsuccessful landing while performing exercises on the rings in the team competition and injured his neck.
The gymnast was immediately hospitalized and underwent surgery. The Italian team withdrew from the tournament after the incident.
Steve Butcher, technical coordinator of the International Gymnastics Federation, said that the athlete's condition will remain uncertain for at least the next 10 days.
It should be noted that the Universiade will end on July 27.
