McLaren driver Oscar Piastri experienced a major shock at the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix held on home soil. The young driver lost control on the way to the start of the race - on the installation lap - crashing his car into the wall.
Idman.Biz reports that the incident occurred at the exit of the fourth turn. Piastri's car suddenly spun, hitting the barrier and sustaining serious damage. Due to the impact, the car's suspension system failed, making it impossible for him to continue and return to the pits. As a result, the Australian driver was unable to participate in the race, where he was supposed to start from fifth place.
Piastri apologized to the fans in a statement after the incident:
"Such a scenario should not have happened, I am very disappointed. Cold tires and touching the curb in the turn caused me to lose control. Everything happened in an instant."
It should be noted that the first race of the season held at Albert Park ended with George Russell's victory and a double for Mercedes. Piastri's teammate, Lando Norris, crossed the finish line in 5th place.
