Canada's national football team will play their first match in the 2026 World Cup today. As one of the hosts of the World Cup, they will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the first round of Group B.
Sport.Biz reports that the match will take place at the Toronto stadium and will start at 23:00 Baku time. This will be Canada's first World Cup match in front of their home fans.
The team led by Cessi Marsh will try to achieve their first victory in the history of the World Cup. Canada lost all six matches they played in the 1986 and 2022 tournaments. One of the hosts' main hopes is the team's top scorer, Jonathan David. Alfonso Davies, who has not fully recovered from his injury, will miss the first match.
Bosnia and Herzegovina have returned to the World Cup after a 12-year break. Sergey Barbarez's team defeated Wales and Italy in the playoffs and qualified for the 2026 World Cup. 40-year-old Edin Ceko, who has recovered from a shoulder injury, may be able to help his team against Canada.
Note that in Group B, along with Canada and Bosnia and Herzegovina, the national teams of Switzerland and Qatar will also compete.
