The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has changed the structure of the qualifying tournaments to be held after the 2028 European Championship.
Idman.Biz reports that the competition will consist of two leagues, the strongest consisting of 36 teams, and the second of 18 or 19 teams.
The best teams from each group in League 1 will qualify for the European or World Championship, and the remaining places will be distributed through a play-off system that will also include the best teams from League 2. This concept will be further refined over the next few months. Each national team will play six games.
Hosts of the World and European Championships will qualify directly for the main stage of the competition, but will participate in the qualifying tournament to influence the qualifying stages for the next Nations League competition. Starting from the 2028/29 season, the Nations League will consist of three leagues of 18 teams each.
