The Mexican Football Federation announced that Rafael Márquez has been appointed as the new head coach of the Mexico national team.
Sport.News reports that the 47-year-old expert's contract is until 2030. Márquez replaces Javier Aguirre, who left the team after being eliminated from the 2026 World Cup.
In July 2024, Márquez joined the national team's coaching staff as Aguirre's assistant. He previously worked at Barcelona B. As a Mexican player, he played for "Atlas", "Montpellier", "Barcelona", "New York Red Bulls", and "Verona". He played 148 games for Mexico and scored 18 goals.
Mexico lost to England 3:2 in the 2026 World Cup and stopped competing in the round of 16.
