Paolo Maldini, the technical director of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), and his advisor Leonardo have decided to leave the Italian national team 10 days after their appointment.

The decision to leave the project is related to the fact that FIGC President Giovanni Malago opposed the appointment of Andrea Pirlo as the new head coach of the Italian national team. The president did not like Pirlo's connections with Russian bookmaker offices. Maldini and Leonardo only wanted to see Pirlo as the team's head coach.
Earlier, it was reported that Pirlo was the main candidate for the vacant position of head coach of the Italian national team, but his candidacy was rejected. Pirlo himself has already stated that he is no longer a candidate for the post of head coach of the Italian national team.
