Aurelio De Laurentiis, the president of Italian club "Napoli", wants Serie A to be reduced to 16 teams.
Idman.biz reports that the country's "Corriere della Sera" quoted his words.
"The system is broken throughout Europe and revolutionary and rapid reforms are needed to pay off huge debts. More and more matches are being played, which requires more and more players, which leads to higher costs," said De Laurentiis.
The president said he hoped Serie A would be reduced to 16 teams, as it was in 1986.
"This will prevent significant fatigue of the players, who are the main asset of the clubs, and a decrease in their value. Matches in a tournament with 16 teams, which gather only a few thousand viewers in front of their TVs and damage the commercial attractiveness of our football, will also be excluded. Many argue that this will reduce revenues, but this is not true, because the value of other matches will increase," added De Laurentiis.
It should be noted that there are currently 20 teams in Serie A.
