The Monegasques are trusting one of South America's most talked-about young coaches after a chaotic season that almost left the team without European competitions.
Idman.Biz, citing journalist Fabrizio Romano, reports that "Monaco" has reached an agreement with Filipe Luis for a two-year contract. The Brazilian specialist is expected to replace Sebastien Pocognoli ahead of the start of the 2026/2027 season, with the club's sporting director, Thiago Scuro, playing a key role in the negotiations.
The appointment seems both risky and symbolic for the current "Monaco". The club finished the season in Ligue 1 in only seventh place and was one step away from complete failure. The Monegasques secured a place in the Conference League qualifying stage only thanks to "Lens"'s victory in the French Cup. If the cup had gone to "Nice", the principality team would have been left out of European competitions altogether.
The season itself has become a description of all the club's problems in recent years for "Monaco". The team replaced bright games with unsuccessful series, regularly lost points against mid-level opponents, and could not stabilize the defense. During the championship, the Monegasques also managed to change their head coach: after the resignation of Adi Hütter, the team was led by Sebastien Pocognoli, who previously worked at the Belgian club "Union Saint-Gilloise". However, tension continued in the club even after the change of coach.
Against this background, the invitation of Filipe Luis seems like an attempt to completely restart the project. For the 40-year-old Brazilian, this will be his first independent experience in European football, but he has managed to create a fairly bright reputation for himself in his homeland in a short time.
Luis began his coaching career at "Flamengo", where he quickly moved from the youth system to the main team. His time at the helm of the club was short but rich. Under the guidance of the specialist, "Flamengo" won the Brazilian Cup, the Carioca Championship, the National Super Cup, and the Libertadores Cup. Filipe Luis became the first person in the club's history to win South America's main club tournament as both a player and a coach.
However, his departure from "Flamengo" turned out to be almost absurd even by the standards of Brazilian football. The management dismissed the coach shortly after an 8-0 victory over "Madureira". Formally, the decision was explained by general dissatisfaction after defeats in the Brazilian Super Cup and the South American Recopa, but tension around the young and overly independent coach had long been growing within the club.
Filipe Luis is considered one of the most tactically literate representatives of the new generation of Brazilian coaches. Even during his playing career, the former defender of the Brazilian national team was perceived as a "coach on the field". He played for "Atletico", "Chelsea", and "Deportivo", worked with Diego Simeone, Jose Mourinho, and Carlo Ancelotti, and in his teams, he tries to combine the European tactical structure with aggressive South American football.
For "Monaco", this is also a continuation of Thiago Scuro's course. He is gradually increasing the influence of the Brazilian direction within the club. The Monegasques actively work with the South American market, trust young players, and have now decided to entrust the team to a coach with a similar development philosophy.
If the appointment is officially confirmed, Filipe Luis will get a very difficult project. "Monaco" is still expected to fight for the Champions League, while the reality of recent years shows a completely different picture: the club is constantly balancing between the status of a top-3 contender and a chaotic team capable of collapsing within two months of the season.
