MLS, the professional soccer league of the United States and Canada, has announced a change in league format, switching to an autumn-spring calendar system.
Idman.Biz reports that the change was announced on the League's official website.
"Starting in the summer of 2027, MLS will switch to an autumn-spring season, which will be one of the most significant events in league history. MLS continues to work with the Players Association to finalize the transition plan.
In connection with this transition, the league will introduce a new regular season format that combines global soccer elements with North American sports traditions. The league will also review possible adjustments to the MLS playoff format as part of an ongoing evaluation process, but no final decisions have been made regarding any changes.
The calendar change and new regular season structure were approved Thursday at an MLS Board of Governors meeting in Palm Beach, Florida.
Aligning our schedule with the world’s leading leagues will strengthen our clubs’ global competitiveness, create better opportunities in the transfer market and ensure smoother operation of the MLS playoffs. This marks the beginning of a new era for our league and North American soccer," MLS said on its official website.
