Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez has announced that he will miss the upcoming 2026 World Cup after undergoing surgery for a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot sustained in the Spanish La Liga matchday 37 game against Betis (3:1).
Idman.Biz reports that this season the midfielder has made 48 appearances in all competitions for the club, scoring 13 goals and providing 17 assists.
"The surgery went very well and I am already thinking about coming back stronger, physically and mentally. Life and football can be cruel when you least expect it or deserve it, but you have to accept that it's all part of the journey. This is a very difficult moment for me and another challenge to overcome in my career - no doubt about it. Now it's time to support the national team and my teammates from home. A big thank you from the bottom of my heart to everyone for their support and love," Lopes wrote on his social media page.
The Spanish national team responded to Fermin's post in the comments below with the following message: "We can't wait for you to return to the field. Good luck and strength to you, Fermin!"
Spain's final squad for the 2026 World Cup will be published on May 25.
