La Liga president Javier Tebas has announced that artificial intelligence will be used to evaluate referees in Spanish football starting next season. Sport24.az reports that he spoke about this to Marca:
"We are planning to implement artificial intelligence in refereeing. Two main areas will be implemented. The first is the evaluation of referees. After each match, the Referees' Technical Committee (CTA) uses observers to evaluate various aspects of refereeing. We are talking about 30 different criteria. Currently, this is done by people; there are 30 observers for 20 different referees. Using artificial intelligence, we are creating a tool that allows at least 40% of decisions to be made objectively using artificial intelligence. A system is created based on all matches and algorithms are developed. Artificial intelligence will analyze everything and show where the referee is right. We are making the process more objective.
Tabales stated that artificial intelligence will also carry out referee appointments:
"I believe in human intelligence, but there are things that artificial intelligence should help with."
According to Marca, artificial intelligence will recommend two or three referees for each match based on certain parameters, after which a person will make the final decision.
