The main goal of Azerbaijani chess players is to win a gold medal at the Olympics.
This was stated by Rauf Mammadov, a member of the national team of male chess players, in an interview with "Report".
The 37-year-old grandmaster shared his thoughts on the team's performance at the European Championship held in Georgia:
"This is similar to the results in 2009. At that time, we had the same points as Russia. My games did not go well. But I won the game against the Ukrainian team. That was also an important victory. Second place is a good result. If we had defeated Serbia, we would have had a great chance to take first place. Second place after 8 years is a good result for us. Young people are also needed in the team. The main goal is to achieve results at the Olympics. I want to tell chess fans to just believe in us."
Another member of the national team, Aydin Suleymanli, said that they believed they would win a gold medal at the European Championship:
"This was my first success in the national team. On the other hand, when I see Shahriyar Mammadyarov and Teymur Rajabov, I get even more motivated to perform better. We believed that we would win a gold medal, but it was not destined. I hope that we will win a gold medal at the Olympics and the next European Championship, and this will be the first for me."
It should be noted that the Azerbaijani national team won a silver medal at the European Championship held in Batumi, Georgia.
