Former UFC featherweight (66 kg) and lightweight (70 kg) champion Conor McGregor has announced his candidacy for President of Ireland.
İdman.biz reports that he has appealed to the citizens of the country regarding this.
The UFC star has called for a petition to change the provision in the Irish constitution regarding the election of the country's president. "My compatriots and members of the Irish diaspora, I am pleased to announce my intention to run for President of Ireland. However, I must note that the current constitutional framework creates significant obstacles to democratic participation. Under the current rules, in order to be eligible for election as a candidate, one must obtain the support of either 20 members of parliament or four county councils. While this system is designed to ensure that candidates have a certain degree of political influence, it inadvertently limits the right of Irish voters to participate directly in the decision-making process. Therefore, I propose that a petition be launched to change the nomination process. My goal is to have my name on the ballot. I believe that Irish citizens, both at home and abroad, should be free to choose the candidates who will participate in the presidential elections. Therefore, I urge you to join me by signing this petition. Your support will help make the election process more inclusive and democratic. This will allow the Irish people to determine their own future," McGregor wrote on his X page on social media.
