One of the main players of "Xilasedici", which took the lead in the Azerbaijan volleyball championship, is the connecting Roman Gursky.
The experienced volleyball player, who is spending his second season in the club, spoke to Idman.Biz in an interview about the team's ambitions, the development of the league, his family and future plans.
- You have been playing for "Xilasedici" for the second year. Last season the team won the national cup, and this season it leads the championship. Are you satisfied with the current situation?
- We have found a good rhythm now and have started playing more qualitatively. But we are not complacent, because all teams fight against us as if they are playing their last game. You can win the regular season, but you can be left without medals in the play-offs. Therefore, the final result is the main thing for us.
- The club made its debut in the European Cups, passed "Styaua" in the first stage of the Challenge Cup, but then lost to "Lindemans". What do you think was missing to beat the Belgian club?
- Passing the first stage was already a great achievement, because "Styaua" had both a more experienced budget and staff. We had to win at home against "Lindemans", but the opponent showed excellent volleyball with minimal mistakes. We performed poorly in many components. Their fans created a wonderful atmosphere - there was a full house in the stands. In Azerbaijan, the number of fans at the games is not large, and I would like to increase interest in volleyball.
- The level of the championship has increased in recent years. What are the main features of the season?
- There are many Latin American players in the league, and almost every team has a foreign coach. There are different game styles - some prefer power volleyball, others play closer to the European style with longer rallies. I think our championship is not inferior to the average European leagues. The development is obvious compared to the last 3-4 years.
- You have played in the Russian and Hungarian championships. Are you planning a legionnaire life again?
- After the game with "Styaua", we signed a cooperation agreement with the Italian agent Marko Mancino. There are some options to continue my career. But my main goal right now is to become a national champion.
- Your wife is a volleyball player of the Azerbaijani national team, Nikalina Bashnakova. What is the difference between being a sports family?
- Last year she played for "Absheron". She has now taken a break from her career as we are expecting a new member of our family. She has been by my side in all my games and her support is very important to me. Family is the most important thing for us.
- What are the plans related to the national team?
- Changes have started in the national team, and the new head coach Boris Grebennikov creates great hopes. There are games with strong opponents ahead in the Euroleague. There are many young players in the team and our main goal is to improve in every match.
- What are your personal goals?
- My main goal is to get better every day. I want to play in strong championships and gain new experience. I am 24 years old and connectors usually reach their best form around the age of 30. I will try to be my best version and make my loved ones proud of me.
