Interview with Giovanni Torchio, the new Italian head coach of the UNEC volleyball team, to AZERTAC
- How did you receive the initial offer from UNEC?
- Frankly, I was very pleased that the president of the UNEC club contacted me. This offer was made at the end of last season, and I immediately found the idea interesting. Being a part of UNEC's development story is motivating for me both professionally and personally.
- What is the main goal you have set with the team?
- Our goal is clear. To compete with clubs with large budgets in the Azerbaijani league. We don't have million-dollar transfers for this, but I think we can partially close this gap with proper organization, strict discipline, and high-quality training processes. The most important thing for me is that the players show their maximum potential on the field.
- How did you carry out the transfers?
- Of course, our budget is very limited compared to big clubs. But despite this, I think the transfer process was successful for us. At least, we were able to add players to our team who we wanted to work with and who fit into our system. Compatibility and a professional approach are more important to me than names.
- What are your expectations for the new season?
- To be honest, it's too early to give a full answer to this question, because the season has just started. But it is already clear from the first games that the league is more competitive compared to previous years. Currently, there are 4-5 teams that have spent significant budgets to compete for medals. This will make every game more interesting and intense. I am sure that a very high-quality and interesting volleyball season awaits us.
- Do you plan to buy new players during the season?
- No, I am satisfied with the current squad. If there are no injuries, we will continue like this.
