The presentation of the World Championship to be held in Baku in 2026 took place at the "Sumo Expo 2025" event held in Osaka, Japan.
According to "Report", only five of the 158 countries participating in the expo - Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Mongolia, Senegal and Japan - were represented by professional athletes and official representatives at the event.
The main purpose of the event was to promote the World Sumo Championship to be held in Baku in 2026 and to increase global interest in this competition.
Azerbaijan was represented at the exhibition by the Japanese Martial Arts and Culture Association. Ulvi Agamirov, vice-president of the organization, made a speech and presented the official PR video of the championship, introduced the mascot AZUMO to the public and invited everyone to Baku.
Also, Gursel Ismayilzade, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Azerbaijan to Japan, Avaz Muradov, Director of the Azerbaijan Pavilion at Osaka Expo, and his team also participated in the event.
One of the notable points was the participation of Cavid Yusifov, a member of the Azerbaijani national team, in the sumo championship held among the 12 most prestigious universities in Japan. In his first match in the open weight category, he defeated his opponent, who was the champion of Japanese universities.
