The 2026 Winter Paralympic Games, hosted by Italy, have faced an unexpected scandal before they even started. Two granite stones intended for curling competitions were stolen from the Olympic stadium in Cortina d'Ampezzo.
İdman.Biz reports that the incident occurred before the official opening ceremony and the first day of competition. Chris Hamilton, an official of the World Curling Federation, confirmed that two stones, each weighing approximately 19 kg, were stolen.
Law enforcement agencies are investigating how these heavy stones were removed from the arena. The organizing committee has already announced that reserve stones have been prepared and that this incident will not negatively affect the competition schedule. Athletes were informed about this at a meeting.
It should be noted that the wheelchair curling mixed doubles competition will continue until March 11. Today, March 6, the solemn opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games will take place.
