Every year, March 5th is celebrated as Physical Education and Sports Day in Azerbaijan.
İdman.Biz reports that this date is celebrated based on the Decree of the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev, dated March 4, 2005, on the establishment of the "Day of Physical Education and Sports".
It is no coincidence that Physical Education and Sports Day in Azerbaijan is celebrated on March 5. On March 5, 1995, the then President of the country, Heydar Aliyev, met with the winners and prize-winners of world and European championships at the Baku Sports Palace, established the Sports Fund, and laid the foundation for a new strategy in the development of physical education and sports.
After President Ilham Aliyev was elected head of the National Olympic Committee in 1997, attention to sports and physical education in the country increased even more.
In modern Azerbaijan, sports are no longer just a physical activity, but also one of the priority areas of state policy. The Olympic Sports Complexes built in the country in recent years, hosting international competitions, and the success of our athletes in the world arena are clear examples of the attention paid to this area.
Azerbaijani athletes have achieved significant success at the Olympic and Paralympic Games, world and European championships, raising our tricolor flag to the top. Behind these successes lies years of hard work, a systematic training process, and the strengthening of sports infrastructure.
Now, modern Olympic Sports complexes have been built not only in Baku, but in all regions of our country. These sports centers are now operating successfully. Strengthening the material and technical base of sports and caring for the professional training of athletes soon yielded positive results.
This year, another proud event took place in Azerbaijani sports: Baku was selected as the "World Sports Capital" for 2026. This prestigious status was granted by the European Federation of Sports Capitals and Cities (ACES), taking into account Baku's sports infrastructure, social sports initiatives, and international competition organizing ability. The title was officially handed over from Monaco to Baku, which is a clear indication of Azerbaijan's recognition as a sports country in the world.
At the same time, the city of Gazakh was also declared the "Sports Capital" in Azerbaijan for 2026, and it is planned to implement various events and projects aimed at the development of sports in the region within this framework.
On May 24-28, 2026, Baku will host the "Baku SportAccord World Sport and Business Summit" - one of the most prestigious platforms where the sports industry and international federations come together. The conference will be attended by heads of world sports organizations, international organizations and sponsors.
On April 30 - May 3, 2026, Baku will host the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Cup. This tournament will be held at the National Gymnastics Arena and will witness performances by the best gymnasts in Europe.
As every year, this year the Baku City Circuit will focus the world's attention on motorsport. In 2026, the race will be held specifically on Saturday and will be one of the important stages of this "Formula 1" season.
In addition, another historic event is ahead for Azerbaijani football. The FIFA U-20 World Championship 2027 final stage will be jointly organized by Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan. The tournament is a world championship held among football players under the age of 20 and is organized by FIFA. Hosting this prestigious championship in our country is another indicator of Azerbaijan's sports infrastructure and ability to organize international tournaments at a high level. At the same time, this competition will give a serious impetus to the development of local football, the stimulation of young talents and the further strengthening of our country's position on the football map.
