The medals won by Greco-Roman wrestler Hasrat Jafarov and taekwondo athlete Gashim Magomedov at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games will be replaced first because their awards were in worse condition.
This was stated by Chingiz Huseynzade, vice-president of the Azerbaijan National Olympic Committee (NOC), in an interview with "Report".
The NOC official explained the reason for starting the medal replacement process with these two athletes:
"It depends on the quality of the awards. The ones they received were in worse condition. For this reason, those medals are sent first".
Ch. Huseynzade emphasized that there was no special reason for the late start of the process:
"Negotiations were underway with the organization that produces the medals. This is a normal process. It has already started, we are sending the medals and after a certain period of time the new ones will return".
It should be reminded that the NOC announced yesterday that it has started work on returning the medals won by Azerbaijani athletes at the Paris-2024 Summer Olympic Games, which later became unusable.
It should be noted that out of 7 athletes who won medals at the Paris-2024 Summer Olympic Games, 5 of them experienced a noticeable change in their medals. Apart from judo Olympic champion Hidayat Heydarov (73 kg) and freestyle wrestling bronze medalist Magomedkhan Magomedov (97 kg), judo Olympic champion Zelim Kotsoev (100 kg) won gold, taekwondo athlete Gashim Magomedov (58 kg), boxer Alfonso Dominguez (92 kg) won silver, Greco-Roman wrestler Hasrat Jafarov (67 kg) and freestyle wrestler Giorgi Meshvildishvili's (125 kg) bronze medals lost their quality.
