An incident occurred in the speed skating competition as part of the Winter Olympics held in Italy.
Polish representative Kamila Sellier suffered a serious facial injury in the quarter-final race over a distance of 1500 meters.
The athlete was in the leading group in the laps close to the finish. A fall occurred during contact with US representative Cristentos Griswold, who was trying to overtake her. As a result, the opponent's skate blade hit Sellier's under-eye area.
The impact was so strong that the Polish athlete's protective glasses were shattered and her face was immediately covered in blood. The medical team immediately entered the ice rink, provided first aid, and Sellier was carried out of the arena on a stretcher. She is currently under medical supervision.
The judges disqualified both the Polish athlete and the US representative for violating the rules. The race was re-run without their participation.
