The B1, B2, and B3 categories, in which para-judo competitions were held at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympic Games, have been reorganized into J1 and J2 categories by reducing the number of categories in the period leading up to the Paris 2024 Summer Paralympic Games and in the Paris Paralympics themselves.
According to İdman.biz, the National Paralympic Committee stated that as a result of these changes, many eye diseases in the J2 category have been removed from the list.
The information provided states that for this reason, our para-judo athletes have been re-subjected to medical classification by the International Blind Sports Association (IBSA). Although Shahana Hajiyeva, the gold medalist of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympic Games, represented our country in para-judo competitions in the J2 category until 2024, it has been clarified that she will no longer be able to compete in para-judo competitions due to the relevant changes.
The Committee has taken all steps to adapt to the changing medical classification requirements: "As the National Paralympic Committee, we are interested in forming a new generation of athletes in all sports. The Children's Paralympic Games organized by the Committee last year, master classes with Paralympic champions, and our promotional work are calculated for this. It is gratifying that our teenage and young Paralympians returned home with medals from the Gymnasiade Sports Games held among schoolchildren this year, the World Cup in Para Powerlifting, and international badminton and para-taekwondo competitions.
As the National Paralympic Committee, we have always been in favor of transparency and will continue to take the necessary measures for the successful performance of our Paralympians in the international arena."
It should be noted that 2 of our athletes could not pass the medical classification at the World Championships for visually impaired judokas (para-judo), which will be held in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, on May 13-15.
