According to Motorsport, US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order formally approving plans to hold an "IndyCar" race on a track in downtown Washington in 2026.
İdman.Biz reports that the race, called the "America 250 Grand Prix," coincides with the 250th anniversary of US independence. The order instructs Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser to work with the presidential administration, the Departments of Transportation and the Interior to develop a joint track plan with IndyCar and secure funding for the event.
The race is scheduled for the weekend of August 21-23, between the "Markham" race in Ontario and the "Milwaukee Mile" race in Wisconsin. Organizing a race in the center of the country's capital will create logistical challenges, especially given the ban on advertising in the Capitol area.
"President Trump has been an incredible honor to our sport and IndyCar is grateful for his confidence and support as we prepare to honor our country with a spectacular racing spectacle," series owner Roger Penske told NBC News.
Penske, who was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by Trump in 2019, attended the signing ceremony for the executive order in the Oval Office. Trump expressed confidence that the race would break participation records.
