The 2026 World Cup has seen its tenth own goal.
Sport.Biz reports that the incident occurred during the third round group stage match between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Qatar (3:1). The ball that went into the goal was initially attributed to Qatari defender Sultan Al-Braka, but later the own goal was attributed to goalkeeper Mahmud Abunada.
For comparison, the record for own goals was set at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, where 12 own goals were scored in 64 matches. At the World Cup in Qatar (2022), only three own goals were recorded.
Qatar finished fourth in Group B with one point from three games and was eliminated from the tournament. Bosnia and Herzegovina is third with four points and retains the right to qualify for the playoffs at the World Cup.
The 2026 World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Argentina is the current champion.
