The return leg (1:1) of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Cup 1/8 final between "Independiente" and "Universidad de Chile" in South America was suspended due to mass riots in the stands.
Idman.biz reports that the first half of the match in Argentina was memorable for mutual goals.
During the break, the situation in the stadium suddenly escalated. Approximately 100 Independiente fans attacked the visiting team's sector. In response, Chilean fans began throwing seats, bottles, fireworks, and tile fragments at them. As a result, a large-scale brawl broke out in the stands, which turned into harassment of Universidad fans in various parts of the stadium.
One of the videos circulating on social networks shows two Argentinian fans beating a 14-year-old Universidad supporter with metal rods.
Although the police tried to control the situation, their intervention did not produce significant results. The game's chief referee, Gustavo Tejeira, decided in the 62nd minute to stop the match and remove the teams from the field.
As a result of the riots, 3 people died, and approximately 10 fans were hospitalized. One of the Chilean fans is in serious condition: he fell from a height in the stands while trying to escape aggressive Independiente fans. After the game, police detained more than 300 Universidad de Chile fans.
In the near future, the CONMEBOL Disciplinary Committee will make a decision regarding the events that occurred during the match and determine sanctions against the clubs. At the time the match was suspended, Universidad de Chile was leading Independiente 2:1 on aggregate of the two games.
