The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has detained the president of the Argentina Football Association (AFA), Claudio Tapia, at New York airport as he tried to leave the country.
According to Argentina's TN channel, the incident occurred after the FIFA World Cup finished.
Along with the AFA leader, other representatives of the organization were also detained. Law enforcement officials seized their mobile phones and computers and started an investigation.
According to court documents, AFA President Claudio Tapia, the organization's treasurer Pablo Tovigino, and businessman Javier Faroni are due to appear before a judge in the US Federal Court for the Southern District of Florida on July 30.
The investigation is looking into the financial and commercial activities of the association, including transactions related to the purchase of expensive real estate in South Florida.
It's worth noting that previously, French investigative journalist Romain Molina made serious allegations against FIFA and the Argentina Football Association, claiming that there may have been irregularities in the organizations' internal investigations and financial transactions.
