Negotiations with the 49-year-old Dutchman are in the final stage, and it is expected that his contract will be until 2028.
Earlier, it was announced that Frenchman Roberto Martinez had left the post of head coach of the national team; his contract was not extended. Belgium reached the quarterfinals of the 2026 World Cup and lost to Spain with a score of 2:1.
As a player, van Bommel won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2006 and won a silver medal with the Netherlands at the 2010 World Cup.
Van Bommel has coached PSV from the Netherlands and Wolfsburg from Germany, and his last job was with Antwerp from Belgium in 2024.
