The Iranian Football Federation wants LGBT flags and banners with the slogan "Woman, Life, Freedom" to be banned from stadiums during the 2026 World Cup.
Idman.Biz reports that the Iranian side is seeking a number of guarantees from FIFA. These demands include allowing only national flags to games, and preventing symbols considered contrary to religious and cultural values from appearing in the stands.
The issue has become particularly relevant in relation to the Iran-Egypt match to be held in Seattle on June 26. That match was planned by local organizers as a "Pride Match" (including the organization of events such as the promotion of same-sex marriage). This decision was made before the draw, but later Iran and Egypt were drawn into that game. Both countries have protested against this initiative.
Iranian officials say that organizers should take into account the religious and cultural values of the participating countries. In their opinion, only national symbols should be displayed at World Cup games.
Seattle organizers have not refused to hold events dedicated to the LGBT theme. The local committee says that these events are planned separately from FIFA's official stadium program, as part of city-wide public events.
